Pearl River sophomore pitchers Caroline Kardashian and Mandy McCarthy combined to strike out 10 in a two-hit shutout victory over Horace Greeley in the Pirates' season opener at home Tuesday.
Kardashian struck out six and walked four in four innings for to earn the victory. McCarthy struck out four and walked one over the final tree innings.
Senior third baseman Amanda Hartigan homered, singled and drove in four runs for the Pirates (1-0). She hit a two-run home run in the fifth to break open what had been a close game.
Sophomore shortstop Sam Alicandri doubled, singled and scored three runs from the leadoff spot. Senior outfielder Kristyn Neroda singled, doubled and scored a run and sophomore catcher Dierdre O'Malley doubled twice and drove in one for Pearl River.
Five of the first six batters in the lineup, including McCarty, had two hits for Pearl River.
The victory and a loss by Nanuet leaves Pearl River Coach Mike Carlacci the record holder for career softball victories in Rockland County with a 352-53 record, breaking a tie with Nanuet's Tony Toronto. Pearl River has won eight section championships, including the last four, and one state championship in Carlacci's 15 years as coach.
Horace Greeley pitcher Jaime Wasser gave up nine runs, eight eanred, on 13 hits in six innings. She also had her team's two hits, a double and a single.
