Pearl River Softball Pounds Out 21 Hits, Beats Harrison (VIDEO)

Pearl River's top two hitters, Sam Alicandri and Kristyn Neroda, combined for nine hits in 10 at-bats in a 13-0 victory over Harrison at home Monday.

Pearl River opened Monday's home game against Harrison with five consecutive hits and never let up on the way to a 13-0 victory.

Sophomore shortstop Sam Alicandri sparked the Pirates by leading off the bottom of the first inning with a triple. Harrison played its entire defense in on the play and Alicandri drove a ball up the middle that got past center fielder Jenna Webb.

Kristyn Neroda, Mandy McCarthy and Nicole Leote followed with singles and Amanda Hartigan doubled before Harrison could record and out and the Pirates built a 5-0 lead after one inning.

That was more than enough for Pirate pitchers McCarthy and Caroline Kardashian, who combined for a two-hit shutout of a dangerous Harrison offense. McCarthy struck out four and gave up one hit in five innings for the victory. Kardashian struck out one, walked one and gave up one hit in two innings.

Pearl River Head Coach Mike Carlacci said his team played great defense, including two running catches by Neroda to take away doubles and "nice plays" by Alicandri at shortstop.

Those two were also on base all game atop the Pirates' lineup. Alicandri went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and Neroda was 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Leote doubled, singled twice, drove in three runs and scored two and Hartigan doubled, singled twice, drove in two runs and scored one for Pearl River (5-0). McCarthy and Erin Woods each had two hits and an RBI.

Alijah Webb accounted for both of Harrison's hits.

The game started approximately 45 minutes late because Harrison's bus broke down on the way to Pearl River.
