Pearl River Sports: Back in Action, Jug Week

Pearl River varsity sports return to the field Wednesday after school was closed Monday and Tuesday for Rosh Hashanah. That includes the Little Brown Jug football game at Nanuet Saturday.

Pearl River Head Football Coach Jeff Michael sent out a reminder online Saturday night, just hours after the Pirates' 28-0 victory over Yonkers.

This is Jug Week.

Pearl River (1-1) will play rival at Nanuet (1-1) 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the battle for the Little Brown Jug, currently in possession of the Pirates, who won the last two meetings in the series.

Check back with Patch later this week for more on the football rivalry, but there is plenty more going on with Pearl River sports this week. There were no athletic events Monday or Tuesday with school closed for Rosh Hashanah.

The Pearl River girls volleyball team will be the only varsity squad to return to action at home Wednsday, playing Suffern at 4 p.m. Three others will be on the road -- field hockey at 4 p.m. at Clarkstown North, girls soccer at Suffern at 4 p.m. and tennis at Albertus Magnus at 4 p.m.

Two more teams will return to action Thursday, with the boys soccer team playing at 4 p.m. at home against Suffern and the swimming team competing at Suffern at 4:15 p.m.

Pearl River's cross country teams both run Saturday, with the boys at the Wave Mania Invitational at Warwick Elementary and the girls in the Darlington Invitational in Mahwah, NJ.

The football team will not be the only Pearl River squad facing a rival Saturday. The boys soccer team travels to Tappan Zee at 12:30 p.m.

Editor's Note: Full season schedules for Pearl River's fall sports are attached to this report.
