Pearl River Sports: Basketball Teams Face Rival TZ

Pearl River senior forward Kevin Degnan spoke about Wednesday's 4:30 p.m. game at Tappan Zee as an opportunity to turn around the Pirates fortunes against their rivals moments after Monday's victory at Albertus Magnus.

"I'm definitely looking forward to Tappan Zee," Degnan said. "We haven't beaten them since my freshman year. I've waited for this game for a while now. I think it's time to step up and have a good game against them."

The Pirates and Dutchmen are both among the top teams in Section 1 Class A. Pearl River (6-3) enters the contest on a four-game winning streak.

"I think a lot of people in Rockland view it as it's so great. There are so many good games," Pearl River Head Coach Jerry Houston, Jr. said of the tough competition in the county. "But when you are coaching in these games or playing them, it's hard."

The schools will also play in a girls basketball game 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pearl River. The Pirates enter the contest 4-2, but  have not played since a loss to North Rockland Dec. 23. Their game Monday against Newburgh was cancelled.

Pearl River Native Gaine Still With Dolphins After GM Leaves

The Miami Dolphins announced Tuesday that they "parted ways" with General Manager Jeff Ireland. That leaves questions regarding the status of other members of the Dolphins' front office, including Assistant General Manager Brian Gaine, a Pearl River native. As of Tuesday night, NFL.com reporter Jeff Darlington said Gaine remains with the Dolphins as of Tuesday night and that he would not be surprised if the team retained him.
