Last season, the Pearl River girls basketball team battled Albertus Magnus and Tappan Zee not only for supremacy in league play, but in Section 1.
All four teams made the Class A semifinals and Pearl River defeated Tappan Zee in the champiosnhip game.
The basketball rivalry among the three schools also carried high stakes on the boys side, with Tappan Zee eliminating Pearl River from the playoffs on the way to the Section 1 Class A championship while Albertus Magnus won the Class B title.
Both Pearl River basketball teams will face off with the two rivals this week, with all of them looking like they will be a factor in the section now that the Albertus Magnus boys team has moved up to Class A.
The rivalry games start 4 p.m. Tuesday, when Albertus Magnus (7-2) will play at Pearl River (5-3). The Pearl River girls (5-1) then play at Albertus Magnus 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Both Pearl River games against Tappan Zee are scheduled for Friday, with the girls game 4:30 p.m. at Pearl River and the boys at 7 p.m. at Tappan Zee. The two boys basketball teams already met .
The Pearl River boys improved to 5-3 and earned their first league victory of the season with a 52-30 win at Nanuet Friday. The Pirates blew open a close game in the third quarter, holding the Golden Knights to only two points. Junior forward Kevin Degnan again led the offense with 17 points.
The Pearl River girls also defeated Nanuet Friday, a 65-38 victory at home.
