Pearl River Sports: Basketball Teams Win Openers

Kevin Degnan, Pearl River's 6-foot-8 senior forward, once again showed why he bring something different to a program that has so often relied on guard play to succeed in Thursday's season-opening 52-38 victory at home against Ramapo.

Degnan dunked the ball four times, accounting for eight of his 21 points.

"It's not like we get dunks in this building, but the kids like to see that" Pearl River Head Coach Jerry Houston, Jr. said. "I've never done it, but I'm sure it's fun to do."

The Pirates showed good balance as well in the victory, with 11 points from Thomas Armour and 10 from Chris Flood. Each made three of the Pirates' eight 3-point shots. Degnan, a Fairfield University recruit known for his versatility, took some outside shots, but looked for much of his offense posting up or attacking the basket.

"He was going to the basket a little more and was a little more assertive, more aggressive," Houston said.
