The Pearl River boys basketball team advanced with a 62-38 victory over Roosevelt in a Section 1 Class A preliminary round game at home Wednesday.

Junior forward Kevin Degnan scored 23 points and senior forward Tom Davis added 10 in the victory for the Pirates (11-8).

"I'm very impressed with the speed at which they play," Houston said. "They really blow the ball up the floor. They shoot the ball extremely well. In years past, that's not something Peekskill did very well. They really pounded you in the paint."

Peekskill shoots a lot of three-point shots, but also has the size to go inside. Pearl River has relied on its defense and an offense built around Degnan.

"I like my team," Houston said. "I like the kids. They work and they try. I like where we are at. We feel good about ourselves. There is nobody giving us a chance going up there, but I think we do have a chance. I know we can go up there and win."

Pearl River Girls Face Brewster

The top-seeded Pearl River girls basketball team (16-2) will play at home 5 p.m. Friday against No. 16 Brewster, a 51-31 winner over Panas in a preliminary-round game Wednesday.

Pearl River Goes the Distance for Track Titles

Cook took first in the 1600 Meter Run and the 3200. Hayes won the 1500 and 3000.
