Pearl River Sports: Boys Basketball Dominates Inside In Victory

Pearl River boys basketball coach Jerry Houston, Jr. often talks about the importance of having at least three players scoring in double digits.

His Pirates have done that at times this season, even having four players score 10 or more points in December victories over North Rockland and Dobbs Ferry

The Pirates came up just shy of doing it again in Monday's 67-54 victory at Albertus Magnus, but they had more than enough offense with senior forward Kevin Degnan scoring 32 points to go with his team-leading 15 rebounds. Junior guard Jack Byrnes was the only other scorer in double digits with 15, but junior guard Thomas Armour and senior forward James Linnane each had nine.

"Jack did well, James did well. Tommy did well," Degnan said. "We had a lot of contributions."

The Pirates were able to attack the smaller Falcons inside. Linnane was a key, scoring seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Pearl River (6-3) ran its winning streak to four games with Monday's victory. Degnan averaged 23.3 points over that four-game stretch.

Pearl River will play at rival Tappan Zee 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"There is very little time to enjoy this," Houston said. "We've got to get ready for Wednesday, which is another tough one."

More Weather Woes
The Pearl River girls basketball team's home game Monday was cancelled because of concerns related to the dropping temperatures and potentially icy roads opponent Newburgh Free Academy might have faced on the drive home.

The Pirates have not played since Dec. 23, but Head Coach Dan Lauture said the Pirates have been getting in some good work at practice. Pearl River is scheduled to play at home 4:30 p.m. Wednesday against Tappan Zee.
