Pearl River Sports: Cook Runs Fifth at States

Pearl River athletes competed in state swimming and cross country finals as well as the Section 1 Senior Bowl in football this past weekend and two Albertus Magnus athletes made college choices.

Pearl River junior Brian Cook ran fifth in the State Federation Championship Saturday at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls.

Cook's time of 16:18 is the second-best in school history at Bowdoin Park, sixth best by a runner from Rockland County. He helped Pearl River finish 12th in the team standings.

The Pearl River girls finished 13th, with Kelly Hayes 45th overall.

Pearl River's McKallen Competes at State Swimming

Pearl River senior Theresa McKallen swam in two events at the 2012 NYSPHSAA state swimming and diving championships Friday and Saturday at Ithaca College.

McKallen finished 15th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.63. She swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.09, good for 23rd place. Tappan Zee's Taylor Lawson finished 19th in that race in 1:09.42.

Nyack's Nicole Ciavarella took third place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.84, the top finish by any competitor from Rockland County at states.

Section 1 Football Senior Bowl

Pearl River players Eric Corcoran and Shane Ocasal and Coach Jeff Michael helped the South team defeat the North, 20-9, in the Section 1 Football Senior Bowl Sunday at Mahopac.

Ocasal caught two passes for 26 yards and Corcoran forced a fumble on a kickoff for the South, which had Michael on its coaching staff.  

Albetus Senior Parahus Signs With Division I Manhattan

Pearl River league rival Albertus Magnus will feature one of the top players in Section 1 Class A this season in 6-foot-1 forward Maeve Parahus. The versatile senior already showed enough to earn a Division I basketball scholarship.

with Albertus boys basketball senior guard Jack Sullivan, who is headed to Division II UMASS-Lowell.

Parahas could be the top returning player in the league now that Pearl River will face a season without all-time leading scorer Christa Scognamiglio for the first time in six years.

Sullivan will play a key role for the Albertus Magnus boys,  who were moved up to Class A after winning a second consecutive Section 1 Class B championship, The team took heavy losses to graduation that included the Falcons' all-time leading scorer, .
