Pearl River Sports: Dominican Back in NABC Rankings

The Dominican College men's basketball team moved back into the NABC Division II rankings at No. 25 Tuesday, but suffered a rare loss Wednesday against Post University.

The Dominican College men's basketball team earned a spot in the NABC Division II rankings earlier this season for the first time in the program's history.

They moved back into the rankings at No. 25 when they were released Tuesday.

As they did when they made the rankings previously, the Chargers (18-4, 12-2 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) lost their first game after moving into the 25th spot.

This time it was an 81-65 defeat at home against Post University Wednesday. Leading scorer Leon Porter (14.3 points per game) came off the bench for the first time this season and managed only three points on 1-of-9 shooting from the field. A.J. Burton came off the bench to lead the Chargers with 14 points. 

Veteran Head Coach Joe Clinton, a Pearl River resident and Albertus Magnus graduate, has Dominican atop the standings in the CACC. His son, Pearl River High School graduate Joey Clinton, averages 2.2 points and 15.6 minutes per contest as a reserve guard.

Dominican's next game is 4 p.m. Saturday at Philadelphia College. The Dominican College women's team also plays at Philadelphia College Saturday, a 2 p.m. start.

The Chargers are third in the CACC in women's basketball at 15-7, 12-3 after an 81-73 win against Post Wednesday. Pearl River's KC Jentzen, a Nanuet High School grad, scored 17 points. She leads the Chargers in scoring (14.2 points per game) and rebounding (8.1 per contest).

Section 1 Basketball Pairings Meetings Pushed Back

The Section 1 basketball playoff pairings meetings that had been scheduled for the morning of Monday Feb. 11 have been pushed back to Monday night. The snow expected in the area later this week might force teams to reschedule games for Monday afternoon.

As of now, the preliminary round is scheduled for Feb. 13, with the first round Feb. 15. 

New Section 1 Girls Basketball Scoring Champion

This may be not be local, but it's worth noting that Ossining's Soniya Chong became the all-time leading scorer in Section 1 girls basketball history with 2,664 points last night during an 89-56 victory over Blind Brook. Chong will play college basketball for one of the elite programs in the country at the Universtiy of Connecticut.

  • Pearl River ice hockey vs. North Rockland has been Rescheduled. Will be played Feb. 13 at 8:30 P.M.
