Pearl River Sports: Ice Hockey Advances

The Pearl River ice hockey team opened the Section 1 Division 2 playoffs with a 9-2 victory over Yorktown at Sport-O-Rama Monday.

Pearl River advanced past the first round of the Section 1 Division 2 ice hockey playoffs for the second consecutive season with a 9-2 victory over Yorktown Monday at Sport-O-Rama in Monsey.

No. 8 seed Pearl River (8-10-1) will play top seed John Jay-Cross River (18-1-1) 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brewster.

Top seed Pearl River (17-2) plays at home 4:30 p.m. today against No. 9 Hendrick Hudson (12-8). The winner advances to the Section 1 semifinals Thursday Feb. 28 at the Westchester County Center.

Last season, three Rockland County schools made it to the County Center, with Pearl River beating Albertus Magnus in the semifinals and Tappan Zee in the championship game.

Three Rockland schools remain in the quarterfinals this season and each plays at home today. No. 4 Albertus Magnus faces No. 5 John Jay 5:30 p.m. today with a shot at another semifinal battle against Pearl River. The Pirates eliminated the Falcons in the semifinals the last two seasons.

No. 7 Nanuet got to stay home because No. 2. Sleepy Hollow lost in the first round, but the Golden Knights now face the team that pulled the upset, No. 15 Pelham, at 4:30 p.m. today. No. 14 Rye plays at No. 11 Peekskill at 5 p.m.  in th fourth quarterfinal, a meeting of two more teams that pulled first-round upsets.

Two Pirates Preparing for State Wrestling

Pearl River junior John Muldoon and sophmore James Kelly will join the rest of the wrestlers from Section 1 for practice today and tomorrow at John Jay-Cross River to prepare for the state wrestling finals Friday and Saturday in Albany.

Muldoon, who won his first Section 1 championship last week, will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed in Division 1 at 120 pounds. Three of the top four seeds are from Section 1, with Ossining's Alex Delacruz No. 3 and North Rockland's Blaise Benderoth No. 4. 

Kelly not one of the top seeds at 99 pounds.
