The Pearl River field hockey team struggled to find its offense early this season, but the Pirates have had no such troubles of late.

Pearl River fired 26 shots on goal on the way to a 5-1 victory at home against Clarkstown South Thursday, giving the Pirates 14 goals during their current three-game winning streak.

"The last three games, we've scored 14 goals, which is big for us," Pearl River Head Coach Shane Carlacci said. "We had a lot of trouble scoring early in the season. If we're going to get hot, this is the time to do it."

Five different players scored goals for Pearl River. Sophomores Courtney Ocasal sparked the Pirates early, setting up Jackie Dowling for Pearl River's first goal and scoring the second herself. Ocasal and another sophomore, Erin Dolphin, each had one goal and one assist.

In addition to honoring seniors Emily Darvan, Siobhan James, Aine McCormack, Julianne Roth and Delia White, the Pirates also wore yellow ribbons with the initials "T.S." on them in memory of Pearl River High School junior Thomas Scognamiglio, who passed away from bone cancer Wednesday. Yellow ribbons are often worn to promote awareness of Osteosarcoma, the form of cancer Scognamiglio suffered from.
