Pearl River Sports: Girls Basketball Pursues County Center Return

The Pearl River girls basketball team is one win away from another trip to the Westchester County Center while the boys basketball team can only look ahead to next season. Pearl River plays Hendrick Hudson, 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The Sleepy Hollow girls basketball team, the No. 2 seed in Class A, gave very top contender in Section 1 a reminder what can happen on an off day in the playoffs with a 50-43 loss to No. 15 Pelham Friday. 

Top seed  at home Friday. 

No. 9 Hendrick Hudson pulled off a mild surprise of its own with a 34-28 first-round victory at No. 8 Harrison, setting up a trip to Pearl River Tuesday at 4:30 p.m..

The Sailors relied on their defense so far in the postseason, giving up 47 total points in two playoff victories. Hen Hud beat Gorton, 52-19, in the prelims.

Pearl River plays the pressure defense and up-tempo style the program is known for, but the Pirates also have depth to keep the pressure on hte opposition.

"They keep coming," Nyack Coach Darren Shepard said after his team's second loss to Pearl River this season. "If one person gets tired, (Pearl River Coach Lorraine Moylan) has another one to come in. That’s tough to go against. I wouldn’t say they were fundamentally as sound as some teams, but that’s a young team. She’s got them moving and they just keep coming."

The Pirates can earn another trip to the Westchester County Center for the section semifinals with a win Tuesday. Pearl River played in the last two championship games, winning last year.

"We do play better at home," Pearl River senior Missy Scognamiglio said before the playoffs began. "If we get those, we get to the County Center, which would be awesome. That would be the fourth time for me. That's the best part of the season, getting to the County Center. I just love it."

The Pearl River boys basketball team's season came to an end with a 70-67 loss at Peekskill in the first round of the Section 1 Class A playofs Friday. The Pirates led as late as mid-way through the fourth quarter.

Junior forward Kevin Degnan led the Pirates with 23 points. 

Pearl River Ice Hockey Opens Playoffs at Home

Pearl River (7-10-1) will play No. 9 Yorktown (5-13-1) 7:30 p.m. Monday at Sport-O-Rama in Monsey in the first round of the Section 1 Division 2 ice hockey playoffs.

The winner of advances to play top seed John Jay (18-1-1) Feb. 20. Pearl River has not played Yorktown or John Jay this season.

Wilson Closes Out Manhattanville College Career

Senior Taylor Wilson of Pearl River scored 25 points in her final game at Manhattanville College Staurday, an 88-70 loss at Misericordia University. 

Wilson finished the season with a conference-leading 19 points per game. She is Mahattanville's all-time leader in three-point baskets (169), three-point shooting percentage (35.4%) and free throw percentage (83.7%).
