Pearl River Sports: Girls Lacrosse Battles Injuries, Coach's Absence

The Pearl River girls lacrosse team lost at home to Brewster Thursday. UPDATE: Pearl River's baseball, softball and boys lacrosse games for Friday have been cancelled.

The Pearl River girls lacrosse team entered Thursday's home game against Brewster shorthanded and it showed.

The Pirates struggled toward the end of both halves on the way to a 7-5 loss.

In addition to missing four starters due to illness or injury, leaving the team with only one sub, Pearl River played for the first time in 15 seasons without Head Coach Laurie Mayernik, who has been suspended.

Mayernik, who plans to retire after the season, is likely out at least until the Pearl River Board of Education meeting April 23. Mayernik, Pearl River School District Director of Human Resources and Community Services Diana Musich and Director of Athletics Todd Santabarbara all said they could not comment on the situation.

Assistant Coach Diana Gillule said it has been a long week for her and the players not knowing what is going on. She said in addition to wearing down as the game went on, Pearl River struggled to deal with the Brewster defense's double-teaming.

Kayla Moreau scored two goals for the Pirates, but it was senior goalie Delia White who kept Pearl River close with 11 saves.

"Delia was on fire," Gillule said. "She saved us big time."
