Pearl River Sports: Hockey, Girls Basketball Keep Winning

Pearl River's two newest winter sports head coaches, Brian DelSavio in ice hockey and Dan Lauture in girls basketball, both have their teams off to 3-0 starts.

The girls basketball team won at Clarkstown North, 53-40, Friday in the third of four consecutive road games to open the season. Junior forward Emma Daly scored 22 points for the Pirates. They play at East Ramapo 5:30 p.m. Monday. Lauture will coach hist first home game at Pearl River 4 p.m. Wednesday against Clarkstown South.

DelSavio became only the second head coach in the history of the Pearl River varsity ice hockey program when he moved up from assistant coach with this season. Tony Capone, who had been the Pirates' head coach since the first season they had a varsity squad in 1991-92, is an assistant this year.

The hockey team remained unbeaten by winning Friday, a 3-1 victory over Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa at Sport-O-Rama. Junior forward Max McGee scored his team-leading fifth goal and added an assist and senior defenseman Gary Healy assisted on three goals for the Pirates. Pearl River goaltender Sam Coughlin made 27 saves on 28 shots and has given up only four total goals in three games.
