Pearl River Sports: Locals Clash in College Women's Game at Dominican

Southern Connecticut State will play at Dominican College 1 p.m. today. Both teams feature starters from Pearl River.

Nicole Grossbard last played basketball for her school in Rockland County nearly two years ago.

The Southern Connecticut State guard missed her entire senior season at Pearl River due to a knee injury, but emerged as a starter very early in her freshman season with the Owls.

Grossbard will return to Orangetown when Southern Connecticut State (3-5) plays at Dominican College (6-4)  1 p.m. today at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg.

Grossbard came off the bench in the Owls' first two games, but the 5-foot-4 guard started the last six. She averages 5.3 points and 3.4 assists per game as one of two freshmen in the starting lineup. The other is Jackie Bethea, who leads So. Conn. State in scoring with 14 points per game and rebounding (9.9 per game).

Dominican also features a starter from Pearl River, though 5-10 junior forward K. C. Jentzen went to Nanuet High School. Jentzen leads Dominican in scoring with 12.9 points per game and rebounding with 7.9 per contest.

Muldoon Wins Top Honors at O'Connell Tournament Again

Pearl River junior John Muldoon earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in the lower weights for the second consecutive year in the Michael O'Connell Tournament at Pearl River Dec. 28.

Muldoon remained undefeated on the season by beating Joe Ginley of Warwick by decision in the 128-pound championship match. Teammate James Kelly won a decision over Alex D’Angelo North Rockland in the 101-pound title match. Both Muldoon and Kelly are 21-0 this season.

Pearl River Comes Up Small in Victory

The Pearl River girls basketball team opened its game Dec. 28 at Clarkstown South with five guards on the floor, including freshman Jenna Scanlon making her first career varsity start.

Scanlon provided a spark with two 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 11 points in a 54-38 victory.  Senior Marissa Scognamiglio led a balanced offense with 12 points for the Pirates (4-1).

Guards Scognamiglio, Amanda DeCourcey and Sam Alicandri have been the constants in the starting lineup as Head Coach Lorraine Moylan continues to work in different mixes of players.
