Pearl River Sports: Pirates Head to Penn Relays, McCarthy Slams Nyack

The Pearl River track and field teams earned spots for two individuals and four relays to compete at the famed Penn Relays starting today in Philadelphia.

The University of Pennsylvania event, which was first held in 1895, draws 22,000 athletes who run in over 425 races over a three-day period.

• Boys High School 4X100 Relay (Small Schools), prelims 10:40 a.m. Friday, finals 1:55 p.m. Saturday, consolation 2 p.m. Saturday
• High School Boys 4X400 Relay, 9:50 a.m. Saturday
• Girls High School 4X100 Relay (Small Schools), prelims 11:10 a.m. Thursday, finals 2:15 p.m. Friday, consolation 2:10 p.m. Friday
• High School Girls 4X400 Relay, 2:10 p.m. today

Wednesday's Results

• Softball: -- Junior Mandy McCarthy hit a grand slam, drove in five runs and struck out seven while pitching a three-hit shutout for the Pirates (5-2-1). Catcher Deirdre O'Malley was 3-for-4 and Julie Marsico was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple. Pearl River's next game is at home 11 a.m. Saturday against Wednesday. 
• Boys lacrosse: -- Goalie John Beckerle made 19 saves and Peter Moreau scored three goals in the loss for the Pirates (4-7).
