Pearl River Sports: Pirates Sweep League Track Titles

The Pearl River boys track and field team relied on its strength in the field events to win the League 4-B championship Monday at Pearl River.

Pearl River finished with 129.5 total points to second-place Tappan Zee's 110, with a 65-29 edge in the field events. That included individual victories in the shot put (Tommy Harris), long jump (William Lutz), high jump (Luqman Issah), triple jump (Patrick Metcalf) and pole vault (Aidan Miller).

The Pearl River girls won by a wider margin with 165 total points to second-place Nanuet's 102. Amanda Moroney won the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and triple jump for the Pirates, but Kelly Hayes turned in the individual highlight.

Hayes set personal bests in two events, breaking the Rockland County record in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:34.6. The previous record of 4:36.15 was set by Suffern's Shelby Greany in 2006 at the USATF Junior Nationals. Greany still holds five county outdoor track and field records.

The Section 1 Class B track and field finals will be held at Pearl River May 25.

• Baseball: -- Chris Beers doubled twice and drove in a run and Rich Masley drove in two runs for Pearl River (8-5-1) in a loss at home.
• Softball: -- Mandy McCarthy homered, doubled and drove in five runs for the Pirates in the road victory. 
• Boys lacrosse: -- James Stephen scored four goals and assisted on another, but the Pirates fell to 5-9 with the loss at Irvington (9-5). 
• -- Kevin Deegan and Gary Healy each shot a 39 for the Pirates (9-2).
