Pearl River Sports: Pirates Win Battle of the Belt

The idea behind the Battle for the Belt was to create something for the wrestling programs at Pearl River and Nanuet that was similar to what the football teams have with the Little Brown Jug.

The newly-created championship belt would go to the winning team for the year, with the added benefit of using the event as a fundraiser for the charity or charities of the home team's choice. The commitment has not gone past this year yet, but there is interest in keeping it going at both schools.

Like the Brown Jug game this fall, the first Battle for the Belt was close. This time it was the Pirates earning the narrow victory, 33-31, over Nanuet Thursday at Pearl River High School.

Pearl River senior Rob Gullo's 7-1 decision over Alex Slaybaugh was the 100th victory of his career. Thursday's event was also senior recognition for the Pirates. Read more here
