Pearl River Sports: Playoff Double Dip Friday; County XC Today

Pearl River will open the Section 1 field hockey and boys soccer playoffs at home Friday in a double-header on the lower field.

The field hockey team, which won the first league title in the program's history this season, begins the Section 1 Class B tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play No. 13 Sleepy Hollow 1 p.m. Friday at home. That is a change from the initial pairings, which had to be revised Wednesday

Following that contest, the Pearl River boys soccer team, seeded No. 3 in Section 1, Class A, will play 3 p.m. Friday against the winner of Thursday's play-in game between No. 14 Peekskill and No. 11 Hendrick Hudson .

Pearl River could get a third playoff team with a home game Friday when the girls soccer playoff seeds and brackets are set Thursday. The Pirates could end up in a play-in game Thursday. The first round of that tournament is Friday.

The Pearl River girls volleyball team, seeded No. 11 in Section 1 Class B, will play at No. 6 Rye 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The Pearl River football team will play the first of two bowl series games 2 p.m. Saturday at Port Chester.

Rockland County Cross Country Championships

The Pearl River boys and girls cross country teams will compete in the Rockland County Championships 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Bear Mountain.

In the girls race, Suffern and League rivals Tappan Zee and Nanuet wil most likely provide Pearl River's biggest challenges. Kelly Hayes is a threat to win the individual championship for the Pirates, with Tappan Zee's Erin Jaskot among the top competition.

Pearl River's Brian Cook enters the meet off a strong showing at Saturday's Section 1 Coaches' Invitational, where he had the lowest time in any of the boys races and the Pirates topped the team merged scores. Tappan Zee finished a close second and should continue to push Pearl River in the county meet and the upcoming Section 1 race.
