Pearl River Sports: Section 1 Postpones Monday, Tuesday Games

Pearl River's Section 1 Class A girls soccer quarterfinal game against Eastchester has been pushed back to Thusday due to the threat of Hurricane Sandy.

That pushed Pearl River's Class A girls soccer quarterfinal game against Eastchester back to Thursday, with a time to be determined. Pearl River (14-1-2) earned the home game as the No. 2 seed, but the contest could be moved if the field is unplayable.

That is what happened on this date a year ago, when Pearl River played Tappan Zee on the artificial turf at the OMM complex in Orangeburg. The surprise snow that caused power outages all over the area began to fall during that contest. (Images from that game are attached to this report.)

"I told them let's hope everybody is safe. Maybe we play or maybe we don't," Pearl River Head Coach Tim Peabody said after the Pirates' first-round victory over Harrison Saturday. "Last year we had the snow storm and it was hard on everybody. This could be worse."

Pearl River advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over Harrison, with senior forward Casey Walsh getting assists on all three goals and balanced effort all over the field kept the Huskies off the scoreboard. The girls soccer team was the only one of four Pearl River teams competing in the Section 1 playoffs over the weekend to advance.
