Pearl River Sports: Section Champions to Clash

Defending Section 1 Class A champion Pearl River will play Wednesday at Irvington, last season's Class B champions.

The Pearl River girls basketball team improved its record to 8-1 this season with a 55-38 victory at Suffern Monday, just as the Pirates moved up to No. 20 in the New York State Sporstwriter Association Class A state rankings.

Pearl River faces its toughest test of the season 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at . The Bulldogs feature a pair of Division I recruits. Brittini Lai is headed to Marist and Alexis Martins to Lehigh University. Irvington is currently the top-ranked team in the state in Class B. 

Martins and Lai combined for 57 points in in the Slam Dunk Tournament. Connecticut recruit Soniya Chong scored 51 in that game for the Pride, the state's top-ranked team in Class AA. 

Pearl River's one defeat this season came at home against Oneonta, the No. 3 team in the state in Class B. Irvington's only loss came against Ossining

Boys Baskeball Wins Close One

Rebounding from two losses in tight games last week, the Pearl River boys basketball team held on for a 66-62 victory at Clarkstown North Monday. 

Junior forward Kevin Degnan led the Pirates (6-5) with 29 points and 11 rebounds and senior forward Tom Davis added 17, but it was sophomore guard Jack Byrnes who put Pearl River ahead to stay by making a 3-point shot with 1:17 remaining. Byrnes finished the game with 11 points.

Pearl River returns to league play for its next game, 7 p.m. Friday at home against Nyack. 

Pearl River Wrestling Travels to Nanuet

Pearl River will take on one of the top programs in the area 4:30 p.m. today at Nanuet. The Golden Knights feature senior Dan Breit, who won the 220 pound weight class at the Eastern States Wrestling Classic this past weekend. Pearl River's John Muldoon finished second at 120 pounds in that tournament.  

Rockland Schools Discuss Leaving Section 1

The athletic directors at Rockland County's 11 high schools are gathering information and holding preliminary discussions to determine if they should move to Section 9 for the 2014-15 seasons.

Tappan Zee Athletic Director Liam Frawley stressed that they are in the early stages. The deadline to apply for the change is Nov. 30.
