Pearl River Sports: Softball Avenges TZ Loss

The Pearl River baseball and softball teams both won Monday.

The Pearl River softball team started slowly this season, with losses against Clarkstown South in the opener and rival Tappan Zee April 16.

Pearl River had already earned a season split with Clarkstown South before Monday's game at Tappan Zee, then did the same against the Dutchies with a 3-2 victory.

"They wanted it since we lost that first game," Pearl River Head Coach Carisa Gaylardo said. "They knew what they had to do. We had unfinished business."

Both times, the Pirates did a better job offensively against a pitcher they were seeing for the second time, on this occasion third-year starter Paulina Gutkin of Tappan Zee.

"(Gutkin) pitched a great game," Gaylardo said. "It was the second time we saw her, so we started to hit. We knew what she was going to throw."

Pearl River ran its winning streak to four heading into today's 5 p.m. game at Albertus Magnus.

"The dynamic is coming together. They are starting to play more as a team," Gaylardo said. "I think that's very important.  Everyone knows their role and they are in the right spots."
