Pearl River Sports: Two Wrestlers Win Section Titles; Basketball Playoffs Set

Pearl River also honored its girls basketball seniors during their final regular season home game, a 42-17 victory over Nyack Monday. UPDATED with time set for boys basketball home game Wednesday.

Pearl River junior John Muldoon and sophomore James Kelly both brought home championships in their weight classes at the Section 1 Division I wrestling tournament Monday at Pace.

Muldoon defeated Ossining junior Alex Delacruz for the 120 pound championship, avenging a loss in the 113 pounds title match last season.

Kelly beat Fox Lane's Brandon Fay, 7-2, in the 99-pound finals.

Muldoon and Kelly both advance to the state tournament Feb. 22 and 23 in Albany. 

Section 1 Basketball Playoffs

The Pearl River basketball team (16-2) earned the top seed in the Section 1 Class A tournament. The Pirates are the defending section champions.

The Pearl River boys basketball team (10-8) will play in the Class A tournament as the No. 12 seed. The Pirates open with a preliminary round game at home against No. 22 Roosevelt 5 p.m. Wednesday. I they win, they travel to No. 5 Peekskill Friday.

The Section 1 pairing meetings were held Monday night.

  • Pearl River boys and girls track and field teams compete in Section 1 Class B Championships at the Armory, 4:30 p.m.
  • Pearl River ice hockey vs. North Rockland at Sport-O-Rama, 8:30 p.m.
  • Pearl River boys basketball plays at home against Roosevelt in the Section 1 Class A playoffs, 5 p.m. 

Friday's Events

  • The Pearl River girls basketball team plays in the first round of the Section 1 Class A playoffs against Panas or Brewster, time to be determined. .
