Pearl River Sports: Weather Delays Continue

Wednesday's snowfall forced the postponement of Pearl River's Section 1 Class A girls soccer championship game at Somers back from Thursday to today.

The Pearl River girls soccer team waited over a year for another shot at Somers, the team the Pirates lost to in the 2011 section semifinals.

Turns out the Pirates had to wait an extra day, as Wednesday's snowfall forced the postponement of the teams' meeting in the Section 1 Class A championship game at Somers back from Thursday to today.

No. 2 seed Pearl River (16-1-2) will play at No. 8 Somers 4:30 p.m. for the championship today.

Members of the Pearl River girls swim team will also be competing today. The Section 1 preliminary-round races, which were postponed from
Wednesday, are set for 5:15 p.m. at Felix Festa Middle School in West Nyack, with the championships 2:15 p.m. Saturday at Felix Festa.

Pearl River's Theresa McKallan is the highest seed going in for the Pirates. She enters the meet with the third-best qualifying time in the 200-yard individual medley, 2:12.72.

Suffern Teammates Get MLB Opportunities

Former major-league shortstop Walt Weiss, a Suffern High School Class of 1982 graduate, was hired by the Colorado Rockies to be the sixth manager in franchise history. He will be introduced at a press conference today.

Former Pearl River AD Tom Doherty pointed out that one of Weiss's former Suffern teammates, Tony Defrancesco (Class of '81) also recently got the opportunity to manage in the major leagues, though on a temporary basis. He finished the 2012 season as interim manager for the Houston Astros.
