The threat of heavy snow today and Saturday pushed Section 1 to adapt its upcoming schedules in basketball and football.
For basketball, that meant pushing back the boys and girls pairings meetings from Monday morning to Monday night. This allowed teams to reschedule games from Friday and Saturday to complete their seasons before the meetings. The Section 1 basketball tournaments are sheduled to begin with preliminary round games Feb. 13 and the first round Feb. 15.
Pearl River and Nyack took advantage of the opportunity, rescheduling boys and girls games from Friday. The boys teams will now meet 4:15 p.m. Monday at Nyack.
The girls will play 4:15 p.m. Monday at Pearl River in the Pirates' senior recognition game. Pearl River will also celebrate National Women in Sports Day, which was Feb. 6, at halftime of Monday's game.
Section 1 also made the decision late Thursday afternoon to postpone the start of the wrestling championships from Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday. The full Division 1 tournament will be Sunday at Pace, with Division 2 at Irvington.
Pearl River will send seven wrestlers to Pace for sectionals Sunday. Junior John Muldoon enters as the top seed in a difficult 120 pound weight class, followed by No. to Blaise Benderoth of North Rockland and No. 3 Alex Delacruz of Ossining. Muldoon lost to Delacruz in the section finals a year ago, but he has beaten him once this season and Benderoth twice.
Pearl River features two wrestlers among the top eight seeds at 99 pounds, sophomore James Kelly at No. 4 and eighth grader Sean McGarvey at No. 6. Jake Kurzhals (113), Nick Simeti (132), Rob Gullo (152) and Chris Flynn (170) also earned their way to the section championships.
Pearl River will remain one of the smallest schools in Section 1 Class A football for 2013-14.
The NYSPHSAA released its BEDS numbers (enrollment in grades 9-11) and the cut-offs for football. At 617, the Pirates fall near the bottom of the range of 600 to 999 range for Class A, with Hendrick Hudson the only school that will be smaller.
