Pearl River Sports: Winter Practice Begins With Changes

Winter sports practice begins Friday for most Pearl River High School teams with familiar faces in new roles.

Pearl River's ice hockey team, one sport that begins early, had its first workout Wednesday with a reshuffled coaching staff. Long-time head coach Tony Capone will serve as an assistant this season, with former assistant Brian DelSavio taking over as head coach. DelSavo has been with the program since 2007.

"Both agreed that was best for the program," Athletic Director Todd Santabarbara said of the switch.

The Pearl River School District Board of Education approved the winter sports coaching appointments at its meeting Tuesday. One change from last year is long-time girls cross country and track and field coach Dan Doherty serving as co-coach for girls varsity winter track along with Liam McGuirk. Doherty had never left the program, having been an assistant coach last winter.

Friday will also be Dan Lauture's first practice as head coach of the Pearl River girls basketball team. Lauture was hired in September to replace Lorraine Moylan, who retired in March after 20 years as the Pirates' head coach. Moylan who still teaches at the high school, will serve as a volunteer assistant coach this winter.

Pearl River Bowling Moves on Without Home Lanes

Pearl River's bowling program still has its coach, but lost its home when Pearl River Lanes closed in May. The Pirates will be practicing at New City Lanes Friday and H Tor Lanes Monday. They will also be holding pre-season practices in Montvale, but their home for matches during the season is still to be determined. They may end up splitting home matches between New City and Hi Tor.
