Pearl River Sports: Wrestlers Advance, Basketball Senior Day

Seven Pearl River wrestlers earned their spot in the Section 1 Championships Feb. 9 at Clarkstown South with their performances at the Division 4 Qualifier Saturday at Mahopac.

James Kelly (99 pounds), Sean McGarvey (99), Jake Kurzhals (113), John Muldoon (120), Nick Simeti (132), Rob Gullo (152) and Chris Flynn (170) all finished among the top four in their weight classes to advance.

Muldoon, Kurzhals and Gullo all won their weight classes, with Simeti and Flynn losing in the finals. Kelly beat McGarvey in the 99 pounds third-place match.

Boys Basketball Senior Day

The Pearl River boys basketball team will recognize its seniors before today's 6 p.m. home game against Hastings, including starters Tom Davis and Rich Masley and reserves Kevin Duffy and Dylan Faller.

Pearl River enters the game 9-7 after a 73-63 loss to Spring Valley at home Saturday. The Tigers ran their winning streak to 13 in that game and they are among the top teams in Class AA.

Pearl River is battling for playoff seeding with two games to go. They finish the regular season 7 p.m. Friday at Nyack. Pearl River , Jan. 18. 

The Section 1 boys and girls basketball playoff pairings will be released Feb. 11, with outbracket games Feb. 13 and first-round contests Feb. 15. 

More Weekend Results

• The Pearl River girls basketball team defeated Floral Park, 56-25, at home Saturday. The Pirates are 14-2 with two games remaining in the regular season, including today's 4:30 p.m. contest at Tappan Zee. 
• The Pearl River ice hockey team lost to Scarsdale, 4-3, in overtime Saturday at Sport-O-Rama in Monsey. The Pirates' record is 6-10-1 with one game remaining.
