Pearl River Sports: Wrestling Edges TZ

Pearl River relied on its depth and strength in the lower weights to win at home against Tappan Zee.

Tappan Zee wrestling Head Coach Peter Dene spoke of the things that did not go his team's way in Thursday's 40-39 loss at Pearl River.

He certainly wasn't happy about the loss, but he could appreciate what it says about Pearl River and the parity in Rockland County wrestling.

"In the big picture, I'm happy for them. It's a weird thing to say," Dene said. "I'm disappointed we didn't win, of course, but to see teams we used to completely roll over and smash come up and do better is great. It's not because we're done. We didn't lose because we're having a bad year. We lost because they're doing the right thing over there."

"We hadn't beaten them in a few years," Pearl River Head Coach Grier Yorks said. "Either they were much better than us or they beat us by one or two points. We finally got one."

Pearl River will carry that success into the Edgemont Tournament Saturday. The other participating teams are Croton, Dobbs Ferry, Eastchester, Edgemont, Horace Greeley, Mann, Mamaroneck, Monticello, Mount Vernon, New
Fairfield, Rye, Salesian, Scarsdale, The Stony Brook School, Tuxedo, Westlake, Woodlands and Yonkers.

The 99-pound weight class should be interesting to watch for the Pirates. According to Yorks, sophomore standout James Kelly will be the top seed and Pearl River eighth grader Sean McGarvey will be No. 3.
