Pearl River Wins Two More in Softball Regionals

Pearl River defeated New Jersey and Maryland Monday to improve to 4-1 in pool play in the Eastern Regional Junior Softball Tournament in West Haven, CT

Pearl River defeated state champions from New Jersey and Maryland Monday to improve to 4-1 in pool play in the Eastern Regional Junior Softball Tournament in West Haven, CT.

Pearl River is tied with the host team from District 4 in Connecticut for the second-best record in the tournament at 4-1, one behind undefeated Pennsylvania champion West Point. Once pool play is completed Wednesday, the top four teams advance to the semifinals Thursday. Both semifinal games are set for 9 a.m., with the championship that same day at 11:30 a.m.

Pearl River will play the host team from Connecticut 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, the team's second game of the day, with a date with Delaware set for 8:30 a.m.

Pearl River opened play Monday with an 8-4 victory over New Jersey champion Mendham. Shortstop Sam Alicandri reached base three times in four trips and scored three runs. Katherine Gilbride and Mandy McCarthy each drove in two runs. McCarthy and Caroline Kardashian combined to strike out 12 and give up only five hits in the game.

Kardashian threw a six-inning complete game in Monday's second contest, an 11-1 victory over Denton/N. Caroline, Maryland. Dee O'Malley went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored and broke the game open with a two-out, three-run home run in the fourth. Erin Woods went 3-for-4 and scored two runs and Jules Madigan was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
