Pearl River's Luke Houston Named to National Association of Basketball Coaches' 2013-2014 Honors Court

A Pearl River student athlete has received accolades this season for all of his hard work on and off the court.

Southern Connecticut State University student and Pearl River resident Luke Houston, along with Tylon Smith of Manchester, CT have been chosen as members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches' 2013-2014 Honors Court. The students are seniors and captains of the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team, according to Southern's website.

A high level of academic excellence must be met in order for students to qualify for such an honor. Student athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution and be the member of a NCAA or NAIA institution with a NABC member coach, according to the college's website.

Houston started all 33 games this season, led  the team in rebounds, averaging 6.6 per game and 2.03 steals per game. He averaged 8.8 points per game and opened the season with 17 points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal. He finished out the season with 9 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and a steal at Bridgeport.
 
Houston's co-captain Tylon Smith earned Third-Team Academic All-America honors and the College Sports Information Directors of America on top of his First-Team Academic All-District distinction. He was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA East Regional and the Northeast-10 Conference Tournaments. He finished out the season with an average of 19.0 points per game and led the Owls in assists per game with 5.0. 
 
Close to 900 student athletes from 335 colleges and universities earned NABC Honors Court distinction.
