Pirate Golfers Look to Be Much Improved in 2011

The Pearl River golf team returns the experience to make a major improvement.

Last season, Pearl River High School fielded a boys golf team that included three freshmen and a sophomore.

It was a young squad that had to gain playing experience in the heat of competition.  Their inexperience showed with a final record of 3-12.

Pearl River coach Doug D'Agostino's expectations are much higher for the 2011 squad, which opens its season today against Nyack at Blue Hill Golf Course.

“We are still a young team but we are a veteran team in experience," D'Agostino said. "I am hoping for significant improvement and that we will have a .500 record or better.”

D’Agostino looks to starters that includes seniors Kevin Aris, Shane Kennedy and Niall O’Connor, junior Brian McGarvey andsophomores Kevin Deegan and Dylan Fallor.

“I am looking for this team to get off on a positive note, be consistent and continue to improve as the season goes on," D'Agostino said. "Because of our experience, we will be more familiar with match situations and handle pressure better than last year.”

Pearl River competes in the National League against schools that include Albertus Magnus, Nanuet, Nyack and Tappan Zee,  D’Agostino points to the defending champion Dutchmen as the team to beat.

“But this season, all the teams are evenly-matched, so if we play well we can really improve in the standings," D'Agostino said. “I know that it is a cliché but I tell my guys to take one match at a time and try not to look ahead.  But a major date on the schedule will be the Pearl River Tournament on April 20 that will include all the league teams.  Looking beyond that I just want the team to play well so they we can qualify for the sectionals.”
