Rockland Athletes Prepare for State Swimming, Volleyball, Football All-Star Game

The state girls swimming and diving championships begin today at Ithaca College. Clarkstown South will compete for the state volleyball championship in Glens Falls. UPDATED with state volleyball information.

Nyack's Nicole Ciavarella will represent Rockland County's best shot at a title at the 2012 NYSPHSAA state swimming and diving championships today and Saturday at Ithaca College. 

Ciavarella's Section 1 record time of 1:04.32 in the 100-yard breaststroke is the second-best qualifying time in the event behind Sewanhaka's Olivia Chen's 1:03.99. Ciavarella will also compete in the 200 IM, where she has the 17th-best time (2:10.41).

The swimming preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. today, with the diving finals at 3 p.m. The swimming championship races begin 1:15 p.m. Saturday.

The qualifiers from Rockland County are as follows, broken down by school with qualifying places and times:

Clarkstown (North and South combined)

  • 400 Freestyle Relay (Katie Chung, Lauren Sweet, Meaghan McGovern, Shannon Farrell) 3:39.59 (13th)
  • Katie Chung, 500 freestyle, 5:11.16 (18th)
  • Meaghan McGovern, 500 freestyle, 5:08.42 (15th)
  • Lauren Sweet, 100 freestyle, 53.99 (22nd)

Nyack

  • Nicole Ciavarella, 100 breaststroke, 1:04.32 (2nd) and 200 IM, 2:10.41 (17th)

Pearl River

  • Theresa McKallen, 200 IM, 2:11.80 (24th) and 100 breaststroke, 1:08.29 (25th)

Suffern

  • Abbey Croce, 1-meter dive, 460.25 (5th)
  • Colleen Hartigan, 200 IM, 2:11.35 (22nd) and 500 freestyle, 5:13.94 (31st)
  • Nicole Liddy, 100 back stroke, 1:00.24 (32nd)

Tappan Zee

  • Taylor Lawson, 100 breaststroke, 1:07.56 (21st)
  • Allison McNamara, 200 freestyle, 1:56.70 (33rd) and 500 freestyle, 5:12.0 (24th)

Clarkstown South Heads to State Volleyball Semis

Clarkstown South will play for the NYSPHSAA Class AA girls volleyball championship this weekend at the Glens Falls Civic Center

The semifinals begin 3 p.m. Saturday in a pool play format with the four remaining teams -- Clarkstown South, Our Lady Mercy, Baldwinsville and Ward Melville. Each team will play the other three once. Clarkstown South opens with Our Lady Mercy at 3 p.m. on Court Two.

The Class AA state championship match will be played 2 p.m. Sunday. 

Section 1 Football All-Star Game

Section 1 may have cancelled all non-playoff post-season games after Hurricane Sandy, but the Section 1 Senior Bowl All-Star game is on for 1 p.m. Sunday at Mahopac.
