Rockland County Sends 11 to Basketball All-Star Tournament

The boy and girls team representing the Hudson Valley (Section 1) at the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Summer Hoops Festival Friday through Sunday in Johnson City will carry a combined total of 11 players from Rockland County.

The tournament matches top talent from all over New York. The Hudson Valley boys team coached by Croton Harmon's William Thom features Kevin Degnan of Pearl River, Luke McLaughlin of Tappan Zee and Kai Mitchell and Jordan Duncan of Spring Valley.

Head Coach Kristi Dini of Somers will take seven Rockland County athletes with her to Johnson City. Albertus Magnus seniors Christine O'Riordan and Ryan Doherty were late additions to a team that includes Nanuet sophomore Alexa Amalbert, Clarkstown South senior Laura Castaldo, Pearl River junior Emma Daly and Tappan Zee senior Kristen McLaughlin.

Two of those players recently made college commitments. Castaldo chose the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and McLaughlin selected Fairfield University. McLaughlin earned second-team all-state honors in Class A as a junior in 2012-13.

The Hudson Valley teams open with a double-header against Rochester at Johnson City High School Friday, with the boys game at 7 p.m. and the girls at 8:30 p.m. The full tournament schedule is available here.
