Rockland Recognizing Coaches

The Rockland County Coaches Association honored many of its own during its annual spring barbecue Wednesday at the Pearl River Elks Club in Nanuet.

Each year local retiring coaches and officials are recognized as part of the festivities. This year two of the new retirees received special awards as well.
Lorraine Moylan, retiring after 30 years of coaching including the last 20 at Pearl River, received the Steve Drummond Service Award.

The Joe Grasso Appreciation Award went to John Pardy, who began  his coaching career at Nyack in 1970 and coached the girls volleyball program at Clarkstown South for the last 19 seasons. His final team there made it to the state final four in 2012.

The Rockland County Coaches Association added a Collegiate Award, which went to long-time St. Thomas Aquinas Softball Coach Barbara Vano.

Moylan was one of four retiring Pearl River coaches honored along with Bruce Miller (baseball), Mike Carlacci (softball) and Laurie Mayernik (volleyball). Coaches Eamon DePeter of Nyack and Dave Sachs of East Ramapo and Clarkstown South Vince Louther were also recognized.

The association welcomed three new members to its century club for coaches with 100 career victories -- Tappan Zee's Gene Kousoulas (softball) and North Rockland's Greg Grasso (boys lacrosse) and Greg Borchers (girls lacrosse).

Among those retiring who could not attend was Jimmy Kane, who began his career as an official while he was a student at Nyack High School in 1943. Tom Doherty spoke about Kane's 70 years of officiating, including taking over as assigner of officials for the Rockland County PSAL in 1969. His Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame bio can be found here.
