Rockland's Kayser-Brady Memorial Tournament in Full Swing

The Kayser-Brady Memorial Tournament, which opened Sunday morning at the Anderson Field Complex in Orangeburg, is in full swing.

Little leaguers from around Rockland County are competing in the games name for two Pearl River players who were killed in car accidents.

In the Billy Kayser Memorial Tournament, Nanuet will challenge West Nyack at the Bocket Field on Thursday at 6 p.m., while Congers will face-off against Stony Point at McKiernan Field. Click here for the game schedule.

The next games in the Alice Brady Memorial Softball Tournament are also on Thursday when Nyack-Valley Cottage will compete against Pearl River at 6 p.m. at McCarthy Field. New City-Congers will also play that day against South Orangetown at Brady Field.

Billy Kayser Memorial Tournament

Congers, 9 – Nyack-Valley Cottage, 7: Congers’ Joey Sclafani had the big hit in Congers 4-run fourth inning, a bases-clearing shot that broke open a tight 4-4 game and gave Congers an 8-4 lead.

Nyack-VC had jumped on top, 4-0 in the first inning on key hits from Casey Marracchino, Noah Kronberg and Johnny Sullivan.  Congers came back with a run in the second (RBI single by Dan Conti) and three runs in the third (Brandon Colon double and Sean Boyle single). 

Base hits by Colon, Boyle and Chris Campanella preceded Sclafani’s game-changing hit in the fourth. NVC mounted a 2-run rally in the fifth frame, Jaison Mock and Kronberg scoring the runs, and added a sixth inning run on back-to-back doubles by Mock and Nicholas Semon.  Mock had 2 hits and scored 3 runs for NVC.   

Pitch Counts: Congers:  Campanella, 75;  Frankie Carigliano, 19; Chris Conti, 22; Dan Conti, 15.  Nyack-VC:  Sullivan, 51; Kronberg, 60; Liam Peabody, 16. 


Haverstraw, 11 – Pearl River, 8: Haverstraw’s huge 7-run third inning was the deciding factor in this game.  Jason Castillo and Zachary Glomski paced the rally with back-to-back doubles, followed by key hits from Marco Olavarria and Brendan Chia. 

Justin Tablizo (double), Nick GiannaHasio and Carlos Llanos each scored two runs in the game for Haverstraw.  Pearl River’s Jack Scanlon had a single and double and scored three runs.  

Conor Duffy had two hits and scored twice. Jack Dwyer, James O’Connell and Leo Deluca also scored for PR.  GiannaHasio, the last of Haverstraw’s three pitchers, held PR scoreless over the last two innings.

Pitch Counts:  Haverstraw:  Glomski, 73; Chia, 43; GiannaHasio, 42.  Pearl River:  Liam DeRubertis, 66; Jack Dwyer, 40. 

 

Alice Brady Memorial Softball Tournament

South Orangetown, 11 – Nyack-Valley Cottage, 10:   Trailing by a 10-1 score going into the final inning of regulation play, Nyack-VC incredibly scored 9 runs to tie the game.  In the bottom of the sixth, however, South Orangetown’s Meghan Murtha walked and scored on aggressive baserunning to give SO a nervous 11-10 win.  SO scored 4 runs in the first inning, four in the second and two in the fifth, before the late dramatics.  Grace Haley had two hits and scored two runs for SO, Sophia Sansone scored 4 times, and Casey Kousoulas, Amanda Malpeli  and Murtha scored a pair of runs. NVC’s big sixth inning was sparked by hits from Julianne Pelcak, Emma Lagana, Sierra Linnin, Maille Hawley and Pelcak again (this time a double).  Hawley also made a great catch on defense. Linnin had two hits, two RBI and scored twice.

INNINGS PITCHED:  South Orangetown: Malpeli (2), Sydney Tobin (2), Sansone (2), Mikaela Hennessy (1).  Nyack-Valley Cottage:  Linnin (3), Pelcak (1), Katie Lane (1), Carlye Graff (2).

 

Pearl River, 16 – Nanuet, 15 (7 innings):  Maeve Woods’ game-winning base-hit in the bottom of the seventh inning ended a wild game that was tied, 12-12, after the regulation six innings, only after PR rallied for 5 runs in the sixth to tie the score.  Nanuet broke on top with 3 runs in their half of the seventh on hits from Kami Degaetani, Julie Merritt and Julia Motter. 

In the bottom of the seventh, hits by PR’s Mollie McCormack, Julie Fitzgerald and Mary Windram preceded a game-tying triple by Erin Higgins, who then scored the winner on the hit by Woods.  Pearl River’s offense was led by Fitzgerald (4 hits, 4 runs scored), Windram (3 hits, 3 runs scored), Woods (3 hits, 2 runs scored) and Brigid Miller (2 hits, run scored).  

For Nanuet, Degaetani had 3 hits and scored four runs, Motter and Merritt each had 3 hits and scored twice, Caroline Murray had 3 hits and scored a run, and Catherine Hardwick had 2 hits.  In the first inning, Kami Degaetani of Nnanuet made a shoestring catch to hold PR to only one run.

Billy Kayser Memorial Tournament

South Orangetown, 15 – Ramapo, 5: South Orangetown (SO)’s Jake Walter pounded a double and two singles, and scored twice, to pace SO’s 11-hit attack.  Ramapo and SO matched two-run first innings, with Ramapo getting consecutive hits from Noah Shatkin (double), John Scavetta and Matthew Casabianca, and SO countering with hits from Dominic Avallone, Zach Sullivan and Brendan Baiamonte.

SO then broke the game open with three runs in the second inning (on hits from Walter and Joseph Francomano) and five in the third frame, with Anthony DeFelice’s double the key hit. Walter’s double then highlighted a four-run fourth inning. Ramapo’s Jake Silver had two hits and scored a run, and Aaron Panitz had a hit and two runs scored.

Pitch Counts:  SOLL: DeFelice, 53; Thomas Kennedy, 37; Walter, 27.  Ramapo: Colin Ryan, 66; Silver, 38; Scavetta, 45.

Congers, 19 – Suffern, 7: Suffern grabbed a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI hits from Aiden Halperin (double) and Trent Spence, and a sac fly by Zach Hochheiser. 

Congers, however, promptly put up a 5-spot in their half of the first, on back-to-back doubles from Frankie Carigliano and Joey Sclafani, plus a 2-RBI single by Daniel Conti, and never looked back, scoring at least 2 runs in every inning, and ending the game on a 7-run outburst in the fifth inning. 

Conti scored 4 runs, and Chris Campanella had a single, double, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.   Sean Boyle put down an outstanding bunt down the first base line in Congers’ first inning.  For Suffern, Spence had three hits in the game, and scored twice.  Nick Milidantri also scored two runs.

Pitch Counts: Congers:  Boyle, 54; Sclafani, 45.  Suffern:  Milidantri, 51; Spence, 53; Jack McClusky, 37.
