South Wrestling Opens Early Lead, Defeats Pearl River

The Vikings won the first five matches at home Tuesday night on the way to a 46-33 victory over the Pirates.

The Clarkstown South wrestling team won the first five matches of its duel meet against Pearl River Tuesday night, building up a 27-point lead that was too much for the Pirates to overcome.

The Vikings (2-11) won the match, 46-33, although Pearl River (3-7) closed the gap by winning four of the final six matches.

“I really wanted that first match, that was a big one, and then we gave away that pin in overtime,” said Pearl River coach Grier Yorks. “They have a real good team. We managed to pull it in a bit, but we just couldn’t catch up all the way. They were just a little better.”

The meet started with the 152-pound match between Sean Maidney of South and Pearl River’s Rob Gullo, with Maidney earning a 7-2 victory to put the Vikings up three points early.

In the next match, South’s Drew Breyfogle scored a pinfall in the 160-pound match, followed by a Pearl River forfeit early in the 170-pound match. South’s Hassan Auwarter drove Shaun Carroll, of Pearl River, to the mat early in the first period, and Carroll hurt his right ankle. He was eventually helped off the mat and attended to on the sidelines.

In the 195 match up next, South’s Paul Okeke and Pearl River’s Tim Fjermestad were tied at three after three periods. In the sudden death overtime period, neither wrestler scored a point, sending the match into the second and third overtime periods, which were 30 seconds each opposed to the minute-long first overtime and two-minute long regulation periods. Okeke scored three points in the second overtime to take a 6-3 lead, and with two seconds to go in the third overtime, scored a pinfall victory.

“Starting out with all those wins was big,” said Clarkstown South coach Brenden Rogers. “Pearl River is very tough in the middle weights, so having a lead getting into them really helped us win.”
