Tappan Zee's Cleary Tops Rockland Girls Basketball All-Time Scoring

Pearl River senior Christa Scognamiglio is second in career Rockland County girls basketball scoring behind Tappan Zee's Stephanie Cleary, who had 2,155 points.

Last month, former Pearl River Director of Athletics Tom Doherty released a list of 37 1,000-point scorers in Rockland County boys basketball history compiled by himself and other sports historians in the county.

Earlier this week, he shared the list of the 49 Rockland County girls basketball players with over 1,000 career points. The full list is attached to this report as a PDF file. 

Stephanie Cleary, a 2001 graduate of Tappan Zee High School, tops the list with 2,155 career points. She is the only basketball player, boys or girls, in Rockland County history with over 2,000 points. Nobody else is close.

Cleary went on to become the all-time leading scorer at Ithaca College. She became the school's first All-American in 2005, making the second team, and finished her career with school records in career scoring, single-season scoring, career steals, single-season three-point baskets and career three-pointers. 

Pearl River senior Christa Scognamiglio finished second on the all-time list in the county with 1,685 points. Denise McGuire, whose school career scoring record Scognamiglio broke as a senior, is 12th all-time in the county with 1,476 career points. Two Pearl River players who graduated 20 years apart, Noreen Annunziata (1982) and Betsy McManus (2002), are tied for 13th with 1,385 points.

Pearl River has five players in the top 20 and , including Kelly McManus (1,258), Kristen McGarvey (1,159), Marie Frawley (1,110), Kaitlyn O'Keefe (1,068) and Kaitlin Page (1,013). Frawley split her four-year varsity career between Albertus Magnus and Pearl River.

Nyack's Tanya Freeman, a 2005 graduate, was third with 1,614 points. 

Norinne Powers, a 1989 graduate, is the highest-ranking player on the list from Nanuet at No. five with 1,609 points, 50 points ahead of 2010 graduate KC Jentzen.

Maureen McCarthy is the highest on the list from Clarkstown South. The 1988 graduate is sixth all-time with 1,578 points. The highest from Clarkstown North is Allison Herman, Class of 1999, with 1,159.

Alaina Walker, a 2009 gradaute who split her career between North Rockland and Albertus Magnus, is 16th with 1,343 points. 

Doherty wrote that a large part of the work in compiling the list was done by "ace historians" John Mercurio, Dick Yerk, Bill Madden, Jamie Kempton and John Humenn. Other contibutors included Lorraine Moylan, Rich Korn, Kevin Metcalf, Matt Sullivan, Frank Mazzuca, Kerry Sullivan, Tess Brogan, Becky Miller, Pat Buckley, Austin Goldberg, Dan White, Darren Shepard, Joe Sigilo, Bill Pilla, Alan Malden and Tom Collins.
