Tappan Zee Softball Topples Harrison, Advances in Section Tournament

Led by starting pitcher Paulina Gutkin, the Tappan Zee Dutchmen eliminated Harrison with a 9-1 victory at Harrison High School Tuesday afternoon.

Tappan Zee scored two in the fourth and three in the fifth inning before breaking things open late to defeat Harrison, 9-1, in Tuesday's Section I playoff game.

The loss ending Harrison's season. Tappan Zee will play in in the semifinals 4:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Beacon, which upset top-seeded Pearl River, 4-3, in 10 innings Tuesday. 

Tappan Zee sophmoore pitcher Paulina Gutkin silenced a potent Harrison lineup throughout the afternoon, scattering five hits in seven innings of work. She struck out eleven en route to the victory.

After Tappan Zee jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning, but the Huskies had their best chance in the bottom of the frame when they loaded the bases after scoring a run, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Gutkin enduced a harmless ground ball to second base and got out of the inning.

With the score 5-1 in the seventh Tappan Zee scored four runs off of three hits to put the game away.
