The Pearl River Parks & Activities Committee puts on the 4th of July Fireworks Display in Pearl River every year, a tradition that goes back to 1979.
This year, the committee is bringing family entertainment to the Central Avenue Field in Pearl River a little early in the form of a fundraising carnival that runs from June 29 through July 1.
Stephen Munno is in his second year heading up the event that his father, Ennio Munno, started. He said that they have run carnivals before and felt it was necessary this year with ShopRite allowing them fewer fundraising days in front of the store this month.
"We went from collecting almost every day in June to the weekends," Munno said. "The fireworks are solely funded by donations. That's a big chunk taken away. We needed to supplement the donations, so we're doing the carnival."
Munno said the community has always been supportive of the event, which costs approximately $17,000 to put on.
"It's a good show for that kind of money," Munno said. "It is a real mainstay in the town. People like it. They donate every year.
The carnival will include approximately 10 rides and food provided by the same vendor that provided rides at last year's 4th of July fireworks show.
"They are excellent," Munno said. "It will be family fun, food and rides."
The carnival is open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Unlimited ride passes will be available for $25.
