Pearl River Week in Review: Kayser-Brady Tourney Begins, GAA Holds Field Day

The Ninth Annual Billy Kayser-Alicia Brady Memorial Tournament kicked off Sunday morning on the Pearl River Little League fields in Orangeburg. The 11-day tournament runs through July 25.

That was just one of the top stories over the past week on Pearl River Patch.

• Hundreds turned out in Orangeburg Saturday for the 16th annual Robert McKiernan Memorial Field Day, which was hosted by the Rockland Gaelic Athletic Association. The family-friendly event is named for a former Gaelic Football player from Pearl River. It features an under-8 tournament named for Dennis McHugh, another former GAA athlete who was one of the firefighters who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
• According to Orangetown Police, 38-year-old Hector Manuel Bonilla of Pearl River was arrested on rape charges and accused of having a five-year sexual relationship with a girl that began when she was 10 years old. 
• Dozens of residents were displaced by an apartment fire in Spring Valley. 
• Fausto Ramiro Maldonado-Miranda, 49, of Pearl River, was sentenced to 10 years in state prison for sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl. Orangetown Police arrested him April 30, 2011. 
• Pearl River Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Morgano announced that the district submitted its' plan for Annual Professional Performance Reviews to the state in June, complying with the state mandate for the evaluation of teachers and building principals. 
• Pearl River School District administrators praised the intent of anti-cyberbullying legislation that was signed into law last Tuesday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, but raised concerns that it could represent another unfunded mandate from the state.
• The Pearl River Board of Education voted Robert Davis as its president and Jackie Curtiss as vice president at its annual reorganization meeting last Tuesday. 
• Also on Tuesday, Pearl River School District Director of Human Resources and Community Services Diana Musich announced that Cindy Mantas resigned as Pearl River High School vice principal. Mantas was hired as principal at Warwick Middle School the day before.
