Last Chance: Orangetown Relay for Life

Our new 'Last Chance' feature lets you know about important upcoming deadlines. The Orangetown Relay for Life begins 7 p.m. Friday on the Central Ave. Field in Pearl River.

The Orangetown Relay for Life will begin 7 p.m. Friday on the Central Avenue Field in Pearl River.

Online registration is ongoing at www.relayforlife.org/orangetownny, but individuals can also sign up the day of the event starting at 5 p.m. Friday. All are welcome to attend from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, though only those who have registered will be permitted on the field after 11. 

In addition to raising money for the American Cancer Society, the Relay for Life honors those whose lives have felt the impact of cancer and brings communities together in the fight against the disease.

The first lap of the relay will be the survivor's walk, honoring those who have been diagnosed with cancer and are still with us. The registration fee is waived for all survivors and there will be a special dinner for them with food courtesy T.F. Noonan's after that first lap.

Event chair Joan Bourke said the organizers are still asking for donations to be included in the raffle, which will cost $5 per ticket and $20 for five tickets. Among the items so far are tickets to see The Lion King, Yankees and Mets tickets and gift baskets. Those interested should contact Bourke at jmbprll@aol.com

The final meeting of the organizing committee is 7 p.m. tonight at Pearl River Public Library. 

As of Tuesday morning, 19 teams and 202 individuals had signed up. The top fundraising group as of 7 a.m. Tuesday morning ws team PRLL with $3,040. The top individual at that time was Noel O'Connell with $1,270.
