Local Businesses Donating To March For Babies Event

The Rockland County March of Dimes March For Babies begins Sunday at 10 a.m. at Blue Hill Plaza. Registration starts at 9 a.m.

King Kone doesn’t sell ice pops, but the ice cream store will provide them at the Rockand County March of Dimes March for Babies Sunday.

“We needed something that wouldn’t be too messy,” said Debra Martin, manager of King Kone. “Plus, ice pops are something the kids can eat after they finish the walk while walking around with their families. We were definitely thinking more about the kids when we decided on ice pops.”

King Kone is one of many local businesses donating something for the event, which is a fundraiser to help mothers have stronger, healthier babies, as well as raise awareness about premature births. Before the walk, Panera Bread from Nanuet and Rockland Bakery will provide breakfast, while Vision Sports helps to warm people up.

ShopRite will have people handing out juice boxes and granola bars along the five-mile course, that starts at Blue Hill Plaza. After the walk, Casa Mia Manor House and Applebee’s will donate lunch, while DeCarlo Chiropractic Care will be on hand as well.

Blue Hill Plaza and Pfizer are also among local sponsors and Patch will be there Sunday.

King Kone, which has locations in Pearl River and New City, is participating in the event for the second straight year.

“It’s a great event and for a good cause,” Martin said. “It’s also a really great local event, and as a part of the community we try to support the community whenever we can.”

Also after the walk, dancers from Nyemchek's Dance Centre will perform a 20-25 minute routine. The school has participated in the event for the past five or six years, according to Cathi Nyemchek, an owner of the center.

“We like to perform at charity events,” she said. “They really like to perform and make people happy and smile for a good cause.”

The dancers will perform on the stage and dance a medley of different styles, including tap, jazz, ballroom and hip hop. The group performing is the school’s competitive performance squad, which performed in Disney World last year and Hershey Park this year.

“I’m really proud of all the kids, and all the time and effort they’ve put in,” Nyemchek said. “I think Sunday is going to be a great day. Some of their parents are going to be in the walk, and then I think everyone will really enjoy their performance.”
