Orangeburg Stop & Shop To Open Friday

Stop & Shop Supermarkets plans to open its new store in Orangeburg Friday.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the location, which is in Orangeburg Commons at 1 Stevens Way on Route 303 in Orangeburg.

"Stop & Shop is pleased to expand our presence in Rockland County with our fifth store in the area," said Stop & Shop New York Metro Division President Don Sussman through a press release. "This new Orangeburg store is a leader when it comes to providing the breadth of selection, service and value, new technology and an extensive range of energy-efficient features."

The store will have a Wifi Cafe and a People's United Bank inside the new store, which will be open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to midnight and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Stop & Shop will close its West Nyack store, which is four miles from the new
location, 6 p.m. Thursday. According to Stop & Shop, 60 full and part-time employees from the West Nyack location will be transferred to the Orangeburg store, joining 90 new employees.

That closing of the West Nyack store was announced as part of the plan as developers gained the necessary approvals to build the new store.

The Stop & Shop is part of the Orangeburg Commons project that was first granted a special permit by the Orangetown Council in 2006. Financial issues stopped the development at the time, but FB Orangetown LLC submitted a request to amend the special permit to alter the site plan June 28, 2011. The primary change was the addition of the grocery store. After an often contentious process, the Orangetown board voted to approve the altered permit in March 2012.

Developers broke ground approximately 10 months ago. Though concerns that not all of the paperwork would be in place for Friday's opening were raised during an Orangetown council workshop Tuesday, the store is expected to open on time.

Stop & Shop announced that it will be making $1,000 donations to the Blauvelt Lions Club, Tappan Zee High School and local fire and police departments.

Stop & Shop will give the first 200 customers the day the store opens a free reusable bag and a new bread product from Gold Medal. There will be family activities during the opening weekend including a balloon artist, cupcake decorating, prize wheels and food sampling.
