Pearl River Softball Clinic, Movie Friday Among Weekend Events

There are many ways to keep busy around Pearl River this weekend. Read on to learn more about upcoming local events.

• Where: Nyack Seaport at 21 Burd Street in Nyack
• When: Friday, Jan. 17 at 12:30 p.m.
• Description: Nyack College will honor two organizations and one individual at its annual Social Justice Day Luncheon Friday. Leadership Rockland, based in New City, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Multipurpose Center in Spring Valley will receive Social Justice Awards. Entrepreneur Maria Luisa Whittingham, owner of Maria Luisa Boutique and ML Gifts & Acccessories in Nyack, will also be given a Social Justice Award. Find out more here.

• When: Friday, Jan. 18 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
• Cost: Free
• Description: The Pearl River Public Library will offer a free showing of "The Sea Wolves," a 1980 movie staring Gregory Peck, David Niven and Roger Moore, in the Pearl River Room. Based on a true story from World War II. 

• Where: Pearl River High School
• When: Saturday, Jan. 18 from 1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. for girls ages seven to nine and from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. for girls ages 10 to 12.
• Cost: $40 to participate. Pearl River softball t-shirt available for an additional $10
• Description: Pearl River Little League is sponsoring this girls softball clinic featuring instruction by Pearl River High School Head Coach Carisa Gaylardo, Assistant Coach Kathryn Moore and members of the 2013 Pearl River team. • When: Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.
• Cost: $50
• Description: The RCC Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 includes Carl Svensson (wrestling, Class of '62); Peter Scheibner (tennis, '72); Kevin Reilly (golf, '95); Kenny Amparo (basketball, '04). Haverstraw Councilman Isidro "Papo" Cancel ('71) will be honored with the Cliff L. Wood Service Award. The 2012 recipient, Suffern Police Chief Clarke Osborne ('92), will also be recognized. Ring In The New Year With The Rockland Chorale Society 

• Where: Living Christ Church, 151 S. Broadway, S. Nyack
  
• When: Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. 
  
• Cost: $20 general admission and$15 students and seniors
  
• Description: The concert, originally scheduled for December, was postponed due to snow. The Rockland County Choral Society will perform seasonal selections lead by long-time conductor Philip Hagemann including the spiritual “Rise Up,” “Shepherd,” and “God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen.” The Handbell Choir of Pearl River United Methodist Church will also perform and is lead by Pamela Gunning, soprano, Alison Buchanan, West Point organist and choirmaster Craig S.
