Homes for Heroes Grand Opening Set for Sunday

Homes for Heroes will open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sunday at 1 p.m. at the site of the new housing for disabled and displaced veterans at 335 Western Highway in Tappan.

Rockland County Legislator John Murphy invited U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderheof, both strong supporters of Rockland Homes for Heroes, as special guests for Sunday's ceremony. There will be dedications of memorials to first responders lost in the 9-11 terrorist attacks and "Purple Heart heroes."

Earlier this week, one of the homeless veterans who will be moving into the Homes for Heroes toured the apartments along with a volunteer who is helping decorate the units, Margaret Fitzpatrick. Read more about the visit here. The veteran has been living in his car.

"Having volunteered for Homes for Heroes, it was very gratifying to meet one of the veterans who will be living here and being able to show him his home," Fitzpatrick said.

Homes for Heroes is built on the land formerly occupied by Camp Shanks, which was the disembarkation point for over 1.3 million soldiers headed to Europe during World War II. For more information, go to www.RocklandHomesForHeroes.com
