Pearl River Girls Lacrosse Advances in Sectionals Without Head Coach

The Pearl River girls lacrosse team put off-field issues aside and won at Ardsley, 14-10, in a Section 1 Class C playoff preliminary-round game Wednesday.
Courtney Ocasal scored two goals and assisted on two more and Lindsey Stephens scored three goals for the No. 19 Pirates (5-12), who will play at Irvington 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Pearl River played the game without Head Coach Laurie Mayernik, who was suspended for the second time this season. Mayernik said after the game that she is resigning effective immediately rather than deal with another suspension.
Mayernik returned to the team after two weeks April 22. She said the current suspension stems from an incident involving the parent of a player Saturday. According to Mayernik, she tried to speak to the parent, who was in a vehicle with the player. When the parent pulled away, Mayernik said she felt unsafe because she was too close to the vehicle. She said she used language that led to her second suspension because it was used in front of one of the players.  She said she would not identify the parent.
