Pearl River's Hayes Sets County Record, Pirates Sweep League Track Titles

Kelly Hayes broke the Rockland County record in the girls 1500 meter run and Pearl River won the girls and boys team titles in the League 4-B track and field championships Monday at Pearl River.

Pearl River junior Kelly Hayes knew she would be pushed in the 1500 meter run during Monday's League 4-B track and field championships at Pearl River with Tappan Zee's Erin Jaskot and Nanuet's Megan Young in the race.

"Whenever we three race each other, it's fast times. It's fun," Hayes said. "It's always a good race. I was just trying to win to get some points for my team. I didn't think that kind of time was going to happen."

Hayes won the race with a time of 4:34.6, breaking the Rockland County record 4:36.15 set by Suffern's Shelby Greany in 2006 at the USATF Junior Nationals. Greany entered the day holding six county records in individual events.

"It's crazy," Hayes said. "I've been third all-time in Rockland (in events), but never a county record, so it's special."

Hayes also accomplished her goal of helping the Pirates win. Pearl River won both the boys and girls league championships Monday. The full individual and team results are attached to this report.
