Pearl River Sports: Girls Basketball To Be Tested in Home Opener

The Pearl River girls basketball team faced a series of challenges to open the 2013-14 season.

The Pirates returned only one full-time starter from last season, senior guard Sam Alicandri and they were adapting to a new head coach, Dan Lauture. They also opened the season with four consecutive games on the road.

Pearl River showed it was up to the last of those challenges, winning all four, capped by a 58-37 victory at East Ramapo Monday.

The tests do not get any easier when the Pirates play their first home game of the season 4 p.m. Wednesday against Clarkstown South, which features University of Maryland recruit Laura Castaldo, a top scoring and rebounding threat. Castaldo scored 19 points and dominated the boards in the second half when the two teams played at South last season, but the Pirates built off a fast start for a 54-38 win
