Orangetown Carnival, Rotary Soap Box Race and Teach Your Kid to Ride A Bike Event

This week's Grab and Go Kids Planner is filled with family-friendly events and memory-making experiences for parents and children of all ages.

Pearl River Rotary Club Soap Box Derby
Where/When: Central Ave. in Pearl River; on Sunday, June 5;
Rain date: Sunday, June 19.
Why Go: Spectators are invited to cheer for the young drivers participating in this year's Pearl River Rotary Soap Box Race. Sponsored by The Rotary Club of Pearl River, this event is intended solely for drivers ages eight to 16.  Prizes and trophies will be awarded, and any leftover prize money will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Fund of Rockland County.
Pricing: Free for spectators. $20.00 per driver/car. Pre-registration required.

Orangeburg Carnival
Where/When:
Dominican College’s lower main parking lot on Western Highway, across from Rosary Hall in Blauvelt.
Dates
: Wednesday, June 1 through Sunday, June 5.
Why Go: Hosted by the Orangeburg Volunteer Fire Association, this year’s carnival features more rides (including the Dream Catcher and Starship), more food and more fun for the entire family! Greek Festival of Rockland County
Where/When:
Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, located at 1 Marycrest Road in West Nyack; Exit 7 off the Palisades Pkwy; Thurs., 5:30-10 p.m.; Fri., noon-midnight; Sat., 11 a.m. - midnight; Sun., noon – 8 p.m.
Why Go: This all-inclusive celebration of Greek heritage is said to be one of the largest cultural festivals in Rockland County. “Learn To Ride/Teach Your Kid to Ride A Bike Day” with
Bike New York

Where/When: Veteran’s Memorial Park; Saturday, June 4 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for children ages five, six and seven years old; from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for children eight and older. Rain date is Saturday, June 11.
Why Go: Children, accompanied by an adult, will learn bike safety and how to ride a bike independently, using an innovative “balancing first” method. For this program to be successful, participants must be able to touch the ground with their entire foot while seated on their bike. Hosted by Orangetown Parks and Recreation, Bike New York encourages and promotes bicycling and bicycle safety through education and events.
Pricing: Free. Pre-registration is suggested. Day registration will take place beginning 15 minutes prior to the start of each class. Participants will need to provide their own bike and helmet. Call 845.359.6503 for further details.

Why Go: Bring your team or your child’s team to King Kone for an ice cream after a game, and ask a King Kone worker to take a team photo, which will be posted on Facebook and www.kingkonepearlriver.com.
Pricing: Photo is free, but the tasty treats at King Kone will set you back a couple of dollars.

“Relay For Life Orangetown” Fundraising Event
Where/When:
Pearl River Central Avenue Field, next to Pearl River Hook and Ladder; This fundraising event starts Friday. evening, June 17 at 7 p.m. and lasts until June 18 at 8 a.m.
Why Participate/Contribute?: Because cancer never sleeps. The American Cancer Society’s “Relay For Life” is a life-changing overnight event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path.
